Henley MBA in Music & Creative Industries kicks off
The launch of the Henley Business School MBA in the Music & Creative Industries sees the participation of two industry achievers; businessman and entertainer DJ S’Bu and TV anchor Peter Ndoro.
"A significant part of my success in business is because I'm always looking to learn, pick up knowledge and use it to grow my own business offering," comments Sbusiso Leope aka DJ S’Bu. "The Henley MBA in the Music & Creative Industries presents a great solution to me - a qualification that retains the incredible heritage of the Henley Business School MBA, ranked amongst the top 1% worldwide - which takes specific issues facing the music industry into account. It's the perfect fit for me as an entrepreneur, entertainer, motivational speaker, and DJ."
With over two decades in the broadcast industry, TV news anchor Peter Ndoro is certainly a familiar face and voice throughout the African continent. His tenure in the industry has also seen him take on roles as executive producer for SABC Africa, and Director of Corporate Communications for CNBC Africa.
About his participation in the MBA programme, Ndoro comments: “I got into the broadcast industry almost by accident – I am a trained accountant, and for a long time thought that was where my professional path lay. Since entering the industry, if there’s one thing I’ve realised, it’s that the learning never ends, and I love a new challenge. In my twenty plus years in this game, I’ve taken on roles and responsibilities that were a departure from my comfort zone – each one was immeasurably valuable in what it taught me. I expect no less from Henley’s MBA in the Music & Creative Industries.”
Scholarship candidates announced
In addition to DJ S’Bu’s and Peter Ndoro’s participation, the two scholarships that Henley created for the newly introduced MBA, have yielded results in two candidates who’ll be part of this year’s intake.
The Design Indaba Scholarship, which was open to attendees, exhibitors and speakers at this year’s Design Indaba has been won by design-maker Mia van Zyl, whose competency lies in creative fabrication, model building and puppet-making. Amongst the projects she’s been involved in are the Opening & Closing ceremonies of the 2010 Soccer World Cup and the Cape Town Carnival.
The Johnny Clegg Scholarship yielded a winner from the theatrical arts, a senior administrator at the Market Theatre Foundation, Tshiamo Mokgadi, who in her five-year tenure at the Market Theatre, has spearheaded several successful projects for the theatre’s various venues.
Orientation
The new-students orientation took place as a four-day starter workshop, featuring a gallery of industry experts providing the new scholars an overview of the MBA; amongst them were programme director at the Henley Business School UK, Helen Gammons, and author of “The Art of Music Publishing”, who was instrumental in the construction of the MBA in Music and Creative Industries, Phil Leavesly, a UK solicitor and South African qualified attorney with 12-years experience in broadcasting, intellectual property, music, media and entertainment law.
The scholarship, worth R220,000, covers all the tuition costs of the scholarship. Representing the best of both worlds, the Music & Creative Industries MBA programme comprises Henley’s core MBA, with the music and creative industry sector section allocated additional time to contextualise and discuss industry-specific issues.
