2015 CT Jazz Fest training workshops announced

13 Feb 2015 6:57 AM

An intrinsic part of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) and what makes it unique, are a series of training and development workshops and master-classes, developed by the South Atlantic Arts and Culture Trust (SAACT).

The SAACT is a not-for-profit organisation working closely with the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and is dedicated to supporting education in the arts, to ensure that there is a sound and vibrant entertainment industry staffed by passionate and knowledgeable people beyond the CTIJF.

Every year, these programmes go from strength to strength, gaining widespread support from government, the private sector, and the public alike. Visiting performers (local and international), happily involve themselves in the myriad workshops – some fun and some more structured and serious.

Workshops are free

Celebrating its sweet sixteen this year, the workshops and master-classes will take place between the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and the Artscape Theatre, as well as the Cape Sun hotel, Guga S’Thebe in Langa and the Cape Music Institute in Athlone.

All of these workshops are free as a result of the dedicated support the programmes receive from its funders and partners, which include the Ministry of Arts & Culture and the City of Cape Town.

Kicking off the workshops for 2015 this past weekend, was the Arts & Culture Focus schools six-week programme. The programme embraces the full scope of the entertainment industry, covering subjects such as; what goes into planning an event like the CTIJF, looking out for technical and performer riders, how to get your band to have a following (if you are a musician); the art of sound and lighting – what mics and lights to use when and how they can boost or detract from a performance and more. The theory side of the programme will end with one of the artists spending time with the students and even collaborating with them on a song.

The Focus schools concert will take place at the Opera House, Artscape from 3-6pm.

Arts ministry renews commitment

Speaking on behalf of one the main funders of the training and development programme, Professor Alfred Nevhutanda of the National Lotteries Board said: "This is what the Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s Training and Development programmes are all about and why the National Lotteries Board is happy to help in ensuring the future of South African entertainment."

The Ministry of Arts and Culture recently confirmed their commitment to another three years of support to the training and development programmes.

The funders and sponsors of the CTIJF Training & Development programmes are: Department of Arts and Culture, National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, Independent Media and the City of Cape Town.
