Crowdfund Abavuki to Spain and Morocco
Abavuki have been invited to showcase their music at two international music festivals, two weeks apart: Womex in Spain and Visa For Music in Morocco. While neither festival offers money, they do offer a chance of sharing Abavuki's music across the world.
Entirely self-funded, Abavuki have had to take everything very slowly. They've taken the road of crowdfunding to try and raise the funding needed to attend the two music festivals.
Twelve years ago a group of young boys from Langa, Cape Town got together because of a real dream! One night one of the band members had a dream of brass melodies being played over traditional African drums. The next morning he started collecting people from his area who played different instruments and Abavuki was born.
"We started out busking on the streets but since then we have toured China, Sweden and Finland; we have been featured on an episode of “What’s your Story” for the SABC, a documentary for the BBC and released four albums," says Abavuki.
