City Soirée presents Past / Future / Tense

19 May 2014 5:29 PM

Look out this June for a new creative music project in Cape Town from City Soirée in collaboration with Brundyn+ Gallery; they're calling it Past / Future / Tense.

The event, featuring Card On Spokes, Bateleur, Toast Coetzer and others, will see music from established artists deconstructed into its individual parts, remixed and reimagined with extended instrumentation by composer and violinist Galina Juritz, and ultimately rebuilt into something unique and new.

The idea is to combine classical instrumentation and compositional techniques with pre-existing music from innovative and interesting artists. Songs from each featured artist will be reimagined and presented in a creative way that will include completely new parts written for violin, viola, cello, double bass, french horn and trumpet with emphasis placed on the collective, rather than simply a band with added accompaniment.

Shane Cooper, who recently won a South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best Jazz Album, will feature in both his electro guise, Card On Spokes, as well as bassist with the ensemble. Cooper will be joined by acclaimed jazz musicians Nicky Schrire (voice) and Reza Khota (guitar).

Having partnered with Brundyn+ Art Gallery, the performance will take place in their parking garage with the aim of adding an extra sense of eclecticism to the experience.

The event, like all City Soirée events, will be completely funded by fans through its crowdfunding model; the concert will only happen if 150 fans pledge. If not, everyone will be refunded in full.
